October 13, 2020 – Digital Content Promoting Violence, Hostility, Intolerance, or Discrimination

The Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission is committed to fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding of the County’s cultural and social diversity. Therefore, when we receive a complaint originating in our community, notifying us that digital content has been posted that promotes violence, hostility, intolerance, or discrimination, it is our duty to take action.  We will immediately contact the individual who posted the item, and ask them to voluntarily take it down. This action is not intended to limit or prohibit free speech.  Instead it is designed to make an individual aware that the digital content foments violence, hostility, intolerance, and discrimination.  We want to give the individual an opportunity to remove offensive material.
