Nominations are now being sought and accepted for the third Annual Tim McCarthy Human Rights Champion Award, honoring the late Outer Cape (and world) activist Tim McCarthy, who died in 2018.
This Award recognizes a Human Rights Champion, an activist individual or organization with a Cape Cod connection, working effectively to promote human rights, as affirmed in the United Nations’ 1948 “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” These includes: dignity, liberty, equality; spiritual, public and political freedoms of thought, opinion, religion, conscience and peaceful association; cultural rights including the right to healthcare and an adequate standard of living; establishment of these rights and the organizational structures to empower the individual. The Tim Fund also adds the following activist recognitions: environmental rights and LGBTQ rights.
A panel of respected local rights activists will again select this year’s Award recipient, who will receive $2,000 to further their activism and human rights work. Last year, the Nauset High School Human Rights Club, and teacher Lisa Brown, were honored.
The award will be presented this December 10, 2021 at the annual Barnstable County Human Rights Day Breakfast. This event, usually in Hyannis, with a short presentation by the honoree expected, was held virtually last year, but no determination has been made at this time.
Nominations and applications will be accepted from through Friday, October 1, 2021. Nominators are asked to fill out the application form, either online at www.thetimfund.org, or by mail to “The Tim Fund, c/o The Provincetown Community Compact, PO Box 819, Provincetown, MA 02657.”
